You Have A Living Hope

You Have A Living Hope

We are living in a very strange time right now. There is a lot of uncertainty and a lot of fear going around. I would be lying if I said I hadn’t experienced any thoughts that created fear or worry in my mind. I feel fine one minute and then the next I feel like I may lose it. It’s natural for us to worry when we don’t know the outcome of a situation. Times like these can easily make us feel hopeless.

I’ve been thinking a lot about hope. Who or what is my hope in? What does hope mean to me? I think that hope is an expectancy I have for something to happen, or something to be a certain way. This worldly vision of hope I hold can work for some things in my life. I can hope my life turns out a certain way, or I can hope a meeting goes a certain way, but when things don’t go the way I thought it would, I can feel like all hope is lost.

When I think about the biblical definition of hope – the confident expectation of what God has promised, and its strength is in His faithfulness – I’m reminded of what I want my own view of hope to be. I want my hope to be in Jesus and the eternal life I have in Him. Placing my hope in Christ sets me up for success, He will never let me down.

A phrase that keeps going through my head is, “You are on the throne.” Every prayer and every whisper is laced with this thought, reminding me that He is on the throne. When I forget Jesus is on the throne, it’s because I’ve put something or someone else there. It’s easy for me to let fear be on the throne, or to let my thoughts be on the throne. I need to put all of those aside and let Christ sit on the throne as He was intended to do. When my focus is on Jesus sitting on the throne nothing else can rule over my life. He is on the throne and He will reign forever.

We don’t know what is going to transpire over the next few weeks, but one thing we do know is God will still be on the throne. It’s ok to be worried and have doubts, but let’s hold onto the hope we know we have in Christ and let go of worry and doubts. Use this time to draw closer to Him. Spend time daily in prayer and in the Bible. We can come out on the other side of this stronger in our faith than we’ve ever been before. So let’s fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith(Heb 12:2). Remember He is our living hope(1 Peter 1:3).

Here are some verses that I find encouraging. If you begin to feel hopeless or overwhelmed, spend some time meditating on the Scriptures and in prayer. If we direct our focus on Him we don’t have time to give our attention to worry and fear.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.  Romans 15:13

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 10:23

But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. Isaiah 43.1-3

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:1-2

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31
